Witchblade anime synopsis / summary:

It is the 22nd century and the world has suffered a great catastrophe that has decimated many cities.  Masane Amaha, along with her daughter, Riko, are survivors of that incident despite being at ground zero at the time.  Masane lost her memories in the aftermath, and a mysterious scar appeared on her wrist.  A few years later, Masane is trying to make a living for herself and her daughter in Tokyo.  Although she is kind-hearted, Masane is a bit clumsy, too impulsive, and not too bright.  Often it is Riko who has to remind her to behave more like an adult. After arriving in Tokyo, they are immediately cornered by the Child Welfare Division.  The agency wants to take Riko away because Masane is unfit to raise her.  When Masane steals a police car in an attempt to get Riko back, she is placed in jail.

A string of gruesome murders have occurred in the city.  At the crime scene of the newest murder, the police arrest a delirious man claiming to have committed the crime.  Believing him to be a drunkard, they throw him into a detention facility, coincidentally the same one where Masane is being held.  The delirious man reacts to Masane’s “scent” and morphs into a robotic monstrosity.  After killing the guards, he breaks down Masane’s cell in order to kill her.  However, the scar on Masane’s wrist suddenly reacts and transforms her body into the “Witchblade.”  With her new powers, Masane easily defeats her attacker and escapes from jail to find her daughter.
