At the Shinigami Weapon Meister Vocational School, young Shinigami (death gods) known as meisters train to harness the power of their demon weapons. Each demon weapon has a human form along with their weapon form, and form a close partnership with their meister. Their mission is to hunt and harvest the souls of “kishin”, evil human souls which have wandered away from the path of good. The ultimate goal of each meister is to harvest 99 kishin souls and one final soul of a witch in order dramatically upgrade the power of their demon weapon and thus gain the rank of a full Shinigami. Maka Albarn is one such meister and her weapon is named Soul Eater, a white haired punk whose weapon form is a large scythe. Maka’s parents are both high level Shinigamis so she works hard to prove herself. After a lot of missions, she has finally reaped 99 kishin souls, and only needs to find the soul of a witch to upgrade Soul Eater and become a full fledged Shinigami. However, luck just isn’t on Maka’s side as she finds out the soul of the witch she harvested was not really a witch.

Soul Eater is a very fun anime to watch with its cast of colourful characters and spunky humor. Like D.Gray Man, Soul Eater inherently has a dark theme to it but spices up with cartoonish settings and characters. It is clearly a series made for the ‘shounen’ crowd but I think the plot will be interesting enough to keep other anime fans interested as well. If you’re looking for a longer anime series to follow, Soul Eater is a good choice as it will span 51 episodes.
