Background: Shigurui was originally a manga by Takayuki Yamaguchi that was loosely based on the novel "Suruga-jou Gozen Jiai" by Norio Nanjo. The manga was serialized in Champion Red manga magazine in 1999. The anime adaptation first aired in 2006 and was directed by Hirotsugu Hamazaki.

Anime Summary / Synopsis:

In 1692, the shogun Tadanaga Tokugawa ruled Japan during the Edo era. However, Tadanaga was know for his sadism and barbarically cruel acts. The story of Shigurui begins at the commencement of one of Tadanaga's most well known acts of cruelty - a tournament between samurai that uses real swords. Essentially it is bloodbath involving the best samurai in the land for the pleasure of one man. The first dual is between two rather unusally combatants. One is Gennosuke Fujiki, a one armed samurai; the other is Seigen Irako, a crippled samurai who is blind. Some think this match is a farce, but as they assume their battle stances, there is a feeling that a spectacular battle is about to begin.
