Shakugan
no Shana anime synopsis / summary
The modern world in the Shakugan no Shana universe
is no
different than our own. It has cities where people go to
work, attend school and go about their normal lives everyday.
But there is another side to this world called the 'Crimson
Realm'. It is a place where powerful beings called 'Flame
Hazes' and 'Tomogara' continuously battle each other. The Tomogara use
'Rinne', puppet-like monsters who feed on the power of
existence. Their easiest prey are humans, thus the Rinne
often make excursions into the human world to feed. When a
person is eaten by a Rinne, they won't just die, they will cease to
have ever existed in the universe. No one in the human realm
will even remember them. The Flame Hazes' sole duty is to
hunt down the Tomogara and their Rinne. They often have no
choice but to carry out their battles into the human realm.
Shana is a young Flame Haze, her full name is Enpatsu
Shakugan no Uchite (Slayer with Flaming Hair and Blazing Eyes). By
destroying the Tomogara, Shana helps maintain the universal balance. To
replace people who have been eaten, 'Torches' are put in their place
like temporary existence fillers. Torches behave just like the person
who was erased but have very limited lifespans.
Sakai Yuji was just a normal high school student who
perceived that
he was living a normal life. Like the majority of people in
the human world, he had no clue of the ferocious battle that was taking
place in his own city. That is until one day as he was walking home, a
Rinne attacked. Normally a person would be caught in the Rinne's
Fuzetsu (a dimensional rift where time is stopped) and would have no
idea what was happening, but Yuji was somehow unaffected. The
Rinne sensed something special about Yuji and went to consume
him. Just then a young girl with flaming red hair that burned
like ember arrived and defeated the Rinne with her sword. She
was Shana.
Yuji was thankful to the girl, but Shana revealed to him
that he was already dead. It was then that Yuji realized that
he was already a Torch, the real Sakai Yuji perished years ago when he
was eaten by another Rinne. Worse yet, Shana told him his
Torch is reaching its limit and soon he will just disappear from the
world. However, even though his entire view on life was
shattered, Yuji refused to stand idly by until his Torch burnt
out. Through his persistence, Yuji eventually befriends Shana
and helps her in the fight against the Tomogara.
Despite possessing tremendous power as a Flame Haze, Shana
is still childlike emotionally and does not have full control of her
powers. She is easily taunted, short-tempered and loves treats -
especially her precious melon pan (bread). As such, when Shana began to
develop feelings for Yuji, she had no idea how to express those
emotions. However, the deeper Shana's relationship with Yuji grew, the
more her confidence and her battle prowess grew. But when
another girl, Kazumi Yoshida, reveals her feelings for Yuji, how will
Shana handle it?
