Background: Seirei no Moribito is the first volume of a series of fantasy novels by Nahoko Uehashi. It was adapted into the anime series in 2007 with animation by Production I.G. and directed by Kenji Kamiyama. Geneon has licensed the anime for North America distribution under the title 'Guardian of the Sacred Spirit.' English translations of the novels are available through Scholastic.

Seirei no Moribito anime synopsis / summary: Balsa is a traveling bodyguard-for-hire whose skill with the spear is second to none. She became a bodyguard to atone for a past sin which resulted in the death of eight of her close comrades. On her return to her home town, she saves a young prince named Chagumu from drowning. But when she was with Chagumu in the river, a mysterious energy enveloped them and prevented them from being carried away by the current. Later, Balasa is summoned by the queen, Chadumu’s mother. She reveals that the king is actually plotting her son’s death because it is believed he is possessed by a powerful water spirit. Upon seeing the queen’s desperation, Balsa agrees and promises to protect Chagumu with her life. But even as Balsa flees from the city with the prince, a group of the king’s best assassins is already on their trail.
