Tale of Saiunkoku anime synopsis / summary

Saiunkoku Monogatari takes place in a country similar to that of feudal China.  The land of Saiunkoku is made up of eight provinces and ruled by an emperor.  However, internal conflicts and a lack of confidence in the new heir to the throne has led to increased unrest and lawlessness throughout the countryside.

Shuurei Kou is the daughter of an imperial librarian.  Although her family is considered nobility, their fortunes have been bad and they lack the money to even repair their own home.  Shuurei works odd jobs such as teaching children in the neighborhood.  She is a deligent and intelligent young woman who aspires to pass the imperial examination and gain a post in the government.  However, it may be an unattainable goal since woman are barred from taking the exam.

Shuurei’s luck is about to change after a visit from the emperor’s advisor.  He offers Shuurei the chance to live in the imperial palace for half a year and become one of the emperor’s concubines.  The new emperor, Ryuuki Shi, is a young man who shows no interest in accepting his duties and responsibilities.  Shuurei’s job is to educate him and turn him into a responsible ruler.  She is offered a small fortune as compensation if she completes her task.  Shuurei’s teachings do indeed rekindle the young emperor’s interest in politics and governing, but her beauty and grace have also captured his heart.
