Rocket Girls anime synopsis / summary:

  High school girl Yukari Morita travels to Axia, a tropical island in the Solomon Islands in search of her father.  During their honeymoon at the island, Yukar’s father went for a walk on the beach and never returned.  Yukari has been raised by her mother alone, but now wants to travel to the island to find out if her father had abandoned them or had been the victim of an accident.

  The island is currently home to a rocket program by the Solomon Space Agency (SSA).  The head engineer of the project, Isao Nasuda, has already had five rockets explode after lift-off.  The SSA is threatening to withdraw funding and shut down the project by the end of the year if Nasuda doesn’t succeed in sending a manned rocket safely into space.  Nasuda decides to go with one of the earlier rockets because of its higher success rate.  However, it has decreased thrust power, so Nasuda has to try to cut the payload by as much as possible – even from the astronauts themselves.

  While Nasuda is searching for a solution, he sets his eyes on Yukari.  Nasuda offers Yukari a “part-time” job to aid in her search for her father.  Yukari agrees but never could have imagined that the job is to be an astronaut.  Yukari is also joined by two other girls, schoolmate Akane Miura and a native girl named Matsuri.  Together they train to become the youngest girls to travel to space.
