The manga's debut was in the 43rd issue of popular Japanese manga magazine Shonen Jump in 1999. An anime adaptation was first aired on TV Tokyo in 2002. Soon after both the Naruto manga and anime were licensed by Viz Media for North American distribution, and has become one of Viz Media's top sellers. 	Story: Naruto Uzumaki is, of course, the main character in the Naruto series. He is an adolescent ninja from the Hidden Leaf Village (Konohagakure) with the future ambition of becoming the Hokage (village leader and most skilled ninja). Although initially Naruto's aim was purely to garner respect and attention to himself, as he matures through his training he begins to understand that a Hokage is one that uses his power to protect others. Unlike most kids in the village, Naruto grew up without parents. But instead of showing compassion to the orphan, many of the villagers despise and fear Naruto. This is because Naruto holds a dark secret. Sealed inside him is the nine-tailed demon fox Kyubi, a powerful demon who had once nearly wiped out the Leaf Village and killed many of its ninjas in the process. The Fourth Hokage of Konohagakure sacrificed himself in order to seal Kyubi inside a vessel, which was the infant Naruto. Naruto grew up without knowing his secret, and a decree by the Third Hokage made it illegal to mention the event. Nonetheless, Naruto was shunned most of his childhood and began to seek attention by playing pranks and creating mischief. It wasn't until The Genin Ninja Exam did Naruto learn about Kyubi and realized that he was Kyubi's container. But in the process he also began to learn how to tap into Kyubi's seemingly infinite power. By graduating from the Ninja Academy, Naruto gained new teammates Sakura and Sasuke. Under the tutelage of their sensei, Kakashi Hatake, the team of young ninjas take on missions and training. As Naruto matures and gains new skills, he also experiences the joys of friendship and the pains of betrayal. All of which prepare him for the journey to become Hokage.
