Background: My-Hime is a fantasy and science fiction genre anime with a school life theme and comedic qualities. The My-Hime anime first aired in 2004, and was adapted into a manga in the same year. A spin-off using the same characters (voice actors included) was made in 2005 called Mai-Otome (My-Otome).

Mai Tokiha thought she received the blessing of a life time when she and her brother, Takumi , were admitted to the prestigious Fuuka Academy with a scholarship grant. Takumi has been sick throughout his childhood, and Mai believes the clean environment at the private school will improve his health. Mai and her brother need to arrive at the school by ferry because the school is situated on an island.
Their peaceful ride is interrupted when an unconscious girl is found floating in the ocean. She is pulled aboard along with a massive black sword. Mai is able to resuscitate the young girl using CPR, she feels bad that her first kiss was given to another girl but is glad the girl is safe.
That night, though, an intruder sneaks onto their ship with the intent of hunting down the young girl that was brought aboard. The intruder's name is Natsuki Kuga, she is a girl who possesses the power of a HiMe (Highly-Advanced Materializing Equipment). HiMes are girls who have the ability to materialize objects and weapons out of photons at will. The girl Natsuki is hunting is named Mikoto Minagi, who turns out to be a HiMe as well. But as Natsuki attacks, Mikoto has already regained consciousness and is ready for her.
A fierce battle breaks out on the ship with Natsuki wielding dual handguns versus Mikoto swinging her huge sword with berserker like strength. The raging battle soon causes the ship to break out in flames and on the verge of sinking. Mai gets her brother to the lifeboats with the other escaping passengers, but then turns back because she wants to save Mikoto too. Mai finds Mikoto and Natsuki still locked in heated combat while the ship is collapsing around them. Natsuki finally finds an opening to deal a lethal blow, but Mai steps in to shield Mikoto. Just when Mai thinks she would be killed, a dormant power activates within her and generates a shield of energy to protect her. Mai is confused as to what had happened, but Natuski realizes that Mai is a HiMe as well and retreats. Mai is relieved that the battle is over but now she and Mikoto were going to sink with the ship.
Mai loses consciousness, but when she awakens she and Mikoto have been mysteriously transported to the grounds of Fuuka Academy accompanied by a ring of fire. Mai is initially shocked, but is relieved to find her brother Takumi safe and sound. Yet this is just the beginning of Mai troubles. Someone is gathering HiMes to the island school and Mai will play a central role in their plans.
