Background: Suzumiya Haruhi first appeared in a series of eight short novels in the Sneaker magazine by Tanigawa Nagaru with illustrations by Noizi Ito. His work won the Taisho Prize, and was made into two manga series in 2004 and 2005. In 2006, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi anime was released. It was immensely popular in Japan, gathering a huge fanbase. Aya Hirano, Haruhi's talented voice actress, sang many of the theme songs. Her CDs sold out within the first few days after release. There is rumors of a second season.

Suzumiya Haruhi anime synopsis / summary:

Suzumiya Haruhi is beautiful, athletic, energetic and smart. You would guess Haruhi would be the most popular girl at her high school, but you would have guessed wrong. You see,Haruhi is not like your average high school girl, or like your average person for that matter. Sure, she's joined school clubs before, as a matter of fact she joined all of them. But she never stayed in any one of them more than one day, stating that they were too boring. Sure, she's been asked out and dated many boys before. But each of those lasted about as long as her membership in those school clubs. Her reason, naturally, was that each of them was too boring.

   Only one thing entertains Haruhi, and that's the supernatural. Basically anything as far away from normal as you can get. Suzumiya Haruhi is not interested in ordinary people, she wants to meet aliens, espers and time travelers. Haruhi hates to be bored, and for that reason, ever since middle school she has been devoting her time in seeking out the strange and mysterious.

   Kyon was just your average high schooler trying to enjoy an easy and relaxed school life. When Suzumiya Haruhi showed up on the first day of class and sat down behind him, he couldn't help but become curious about her. Against the warnings from his friends, Kyon began to talk to Haruhi in the mornings before class started. They hadn't become friends in the normal sense, but Haruhi naturally opened up to Kyon about her thoughts and ideas. This was a big shock to those who knew Haruhi because she normally didn't bother to speak to any of her classmates since they weren't interesting enough. To Kyon, it was just fun watching Haruhi's odd behaviors and talking to her about them.

   Then one day upon hearing about Haruhi’s failure to find a suitable club for her ‘unique’ interests, Kyon unwittingly suggested to her that she could start one of her own. Haruhi didn’t say much to Kyon after that, and just stared out the window with a bored look like she always does. But the next day, Haruhi suddenly announced to Kyon about her great idea of starting her own club at school. And Kyon was going to be the first member, whether he liked it or not. The club was to be given the preposterously long name of Save Our World by Overloading it with Fun Suzumiya Haruhi’s Brigade, or S.O.S. Brigade for short. Its mission was to investigate all types of supernatural activities, which include uncovering aliens, espers and time travelers living among the population. But mostly, it was a club for doing anything Haruhi thought was fun or interesting. Of course, Suzumiya Haruhi nominated herself as the chief in command of the S.O.S. Brigade.

   And that’s how Kyon became entwined in Suzumiya Haruhi’s world. Unfortunately, he won’t be the last one to be dragged into the SOS Brigade. Other willing or not so willing members include the quiet Nagato Yuki, the cute Asahina Mikuru, and prettyboy Itsuki Koizumi. But as Kyon will find out, each of them are not who they seem. They were gathered into the S.O.S. Brigade for a purpose, and they will reveal to Kyon something about Suzumiya Haruhi that will challenge his perception of the world.
