Kekkaishi anime synopsis / summary Kekkaishi is the story of Yoshimori Sumimura, a young boy who is the successor of a family of ‘Barrier Masters’ who have protected Japan from monsters and demons known as Ayakashi since ancient times. The Kekkaishi are tasked with protecting a site called Karasumori, a place with immense magical powers. Any Ayakashi which enter the site must be eliminated quickly before they grow too powerful to control. Coincidentally, Yoshimori’s school just happens to be on the site of the Karasumori. Yoshimori must juggle between his school work during the day and battling demons at night. He is aided by Tokine Yukimura, a girl from a rival house of Kekkaishi users. Tokine and Yoshimori grew up together and are good friends, but Tokine still taunts him daily because his Kekkaishi skills lack finesse. Yoshimori had hated his lifestyle as a Kekkaishi in the past, but after an incident where Tokine saved him from an Ayakaishi by sacrificing herself, he has sworn to become a great Barrier Master and make sure she is never injured again.
