Hayate the Combat Butler anime synopsis / summary:

  Hayate Ayasaki is a 16-year-old high school student who works all kinds of part-time jobs because his parents are unemployed and have gambled away their savings.  Hayate is not a very lucky person, but working all the time has made him incredibly tough.  On Christmas Eve, Hayate comes home to find a note from his parents telling him to take care of their million dollar debt that they carelessly racked up.  Soon, Hayate is on the run from yakuza debt collectors.

  Hayate wanders into a park and meets a young girl who appears to be from a wealthy family.  He decides that the only way to pay off the huge debt is to kidnap the girl and demand a ransom.  However, the girl misinterprets his words as a confession of love and willingly goes along with it.  Hayate soon discovers he isn’t cut out to be a bad guy, but before he can return the girl another group of people kidnaps her.

  It turns out she is Nagi Sanzenin, the sheltered heiress to a vast fortune and the target of many people seeking easy money.  Hayate takes the initiative to rescue Nagi and proves his toughness by chasing down their car on a bike.  Nagi shows her gratitude by allowing Hayate to become her new butler and bodyguard.  All the while, she still believes Hayate will fulfill his confession of love.
