Hataraki Man anime synopsis / summary

Hiroko Matsukata is a female journalist who works the Gotansha magazine company (Gotansha is a play on the actual Japanese manga magazine publisher Kodansha - which publishes the Hataraki Man manga). Hiroko puts all her energy into her work and is always willing to jump on the next hot scoop regardless of everything else, including her personal life. Whenever she faces a tight deadline, she turns on her inner “Hataraki Man” (working man) power, and switches to man mode where all she is able to work three times as hard as normal and compeletly ignores her bodily needs like food and sleep. She has the respect of her editors and the admiration of co-workers.

But even though Hiroko has a boyfriend, their lives lack romance. It doesn’t help that her boyfriend is as much a workaholic as she is. Whenever they plan a date, something always comes up for one of them and they end up postphoning it. Recently, a new writer has shown up at Gotansha, his name is Tanaka Kunio and his work attitude is completely different from hers. Tanaka likes to take an easy road through life - just do what is required and relax that rest of the time, don’t overwork yourself. Consequently, he and Hiroko don’t get along at all, Tanaka even refuses to let her proof read his work.

Hitaraki Man is well animated and has excellent character designs. The humor is more on the mature side, kind of like the stuff used in Genshiken. For some reason Hataraki Man reminds me of Ally McBeal, the North American TV series. I guess because they both find humor in a professional occupational environment. The Hatarkai Man anime opening theme is particular funny; the beginning uses macho huffing sounds and the rest of the song is upbeat and catchy - it suits the series very well.
