Haruhi Kamizaka is a talented mage in training at a top class mage school which is next door to a regular high school. It was her dream to become a mage some day because a kind boy had rescued her from bullies by using magic when she was younger. Valentine’s Day is fast approaching and Haruhi wants to give her chocolate to the boy who saved her those many years ago. While going home, she witnesses a student from the high school next door chase away bullies who were teasing a young girl. His name is Yuuma Kohinata and Haruhi believes he is the same boy she remembers from her childhood.
On Valentine’s Day, Haruhi’s friend and rival mage, Anri Hiiragi, demands to know who Haruhi will give her chocolates to. When Haruhi refuses, Anri challenges her to an impromptu magic duel. Anri’s magic goes wild and flies out of the building, startling a group of students walking nearby. When Haruhi goes to check on them, she sees Yuuma among them. She hands the surprised Yuuma her chocolates, but Anri also cuts in and gives Yuuma her own.
That evening an explosion at the mage school causes enough damage to shut it down for major repairs. The mage students have to continue their training and are divided amongst the classes of the regular high school next door. Coincidentally, Anri and Haruhi end up in Yuuma’s class.
