Gakuen Utopia Manabi Straight anime synopsis / summary:

The year is 2035 and the birth rate in Japan has fallen to such a level that many schools have to be shut down because there simply aren’t enough students to attend them. The situation isn’t any different at the all-girls private school of Seiou Academy. The lack of attendance results in low morale for both the students and the teachers.

Mika Inamori is a timid young girl who attends Seiou Academy. Despite her shy nature, Mika is on the student council as the vice-president. Rather, she is the only member of the student council because no one wants to fill the other positions. On her way to school for the 45th annual swim meet, Mika finds herself running late. After taking a shortcut through the park, she comes across a strange girl named Manami Amamiya, who spontaneously jumps off an overpass to greet her face to face. Manami, who insists on being called “Manabi”, asks Mika for directions to Seiou because she just transferred to the school. Seeing that they’re running late, Manabi offers Mika a ride on her hover scooter (think Back to the Future). With her motto, “Massugu Go!” (Go Straight Ahead!), Manabi blasts a straight path in the direction of the school disregarding any obstacles in her way.

Manabi and Mika end up crashing through a fence but reach the swim meet on time. As usual, everyone including the adults is apathetic to the event. Mika is a participant of the relay race, which is surprising as she can’t swim. The energetic Manabi comes forth and volunteers to take her place. Her presence seems to renew the spirits of everyone around her. But despite her boasts about being an expert swimmer, she makes a wild dive into the water and becomes entangled in the lane separating buoys.

On the next day during an assembly, Mika nervously goes in front of the entire student body to try to get students to fill the student council positions. As usual no one seems to be interested in the least. That is until Manabi enters the auditorium by crashing through the doors on her hover scooter. After making her dynamic entrance, Manabi declares that she will take on the role of student president. However, because of the trouble she has caused and the fact that she is a new student, the school principal denies her nomination. But Manabi reminds her that the only prerequisite to join the student council is that the person must love Seiou Academy. To prove her devotion to the school, Manabi begins to sing the school’s official song which she heard only once the day before. Her heartfelt song moves everyone in the audience and so begins Manabi’s new role as Seiou’s student president.
