Full Metal Alchemist is set in the
country Amestris, in a world much resembling early industrialized
Europe. It is a place where advanced technology intermingles
with a pseudoscience of transmutation know as alchemy.
Although powerful, alchemy is not akin to magic since it
cannot create something from nothing.Alchemy is governed by
the rule of equivalent exchange; in order to create something new you
must offer something of equal value in return.
Brothers Edward (Ed) and Alphonse (Al)
Elric are the young sons to a great alchemist who served with the
military. But he left Edward and Alphonse with their mother
when they were very young. The brothers took after their
father's talent and took an innate interest in alchemy. When
their mother, Trisha Elric, died
from an illness, the Elric brothers made the rash decision of bringing
their mother back using human transmutation - a serious alchemy taboo.
Their attempt ended in a tragic failure which cost
Alphonse's entire body as well as Edward's left leg - the price of
eqivalent trade. In a last ditch effort to save his brother,
Edward used his right arm as a sacrifice to seal Alphonse's soul within
a suit of armor.
Advancing to the present timeline of
Full Metal Alchemist, Edward has matured into adolescence but Al still
inhabits the suit
of armor. Both have trained hard to become expert alchemists,
Al has replaced his lost arm and leg with an
advanced metal prosthesis called Automail.
In order to find a
way to regain their bodies and seek out more information about their
father, Ed joins the military as a State Alchemist. He and Al
travel the country working under the military. Because of
Ed's mechanical limbs and his mastery of metal transmutations, he is
known as the Fullmetal Alchemist.
The Elric brothers' ulterior
motive is to seek out the Philospher's Stone, a legendary alchemy item
which is rumored to allow an alchemist to overcome the law of
equivalent trade. But such a powerful artifact is bound to
attract attention, especially from those who seek to abuse its powers.
In seeking the fabled Stone, the brothers walk down a
dangerous path.
