Fate Stay Night anime synopsis / summary

Shirou Emiya is a young high school student with a talent as a mechanic.  Shirou has the special ability to "trace" an object in order to determine its composition and use that to enforce or weaken the object.  It is a type of magic he learned from his adoptive father, Kiritsugu Emiya, a mysterious man who is secretly a magi (sorceror).  Shirou's lost his parents years ago in a devastating inferno that engulfed their city. It was Kiritsugu who found the lone survivor and raised Shirou as his own son.  But unlike his adoptive father, Shirou lacked the talent to wield magic, his abilities extending only to "tracing".  However, Shirou did inherit Kiritsugu's morals and took it upon himself to fulfill his father's ambition of becoming a Protector of Justice.  In doing so, Shirou adopted a very rigid sense of honor and self-sacrifice, often to the point of being irrational.

After finishing up his cleaning duties at school alone late one night, Shirou encounters two figures fighting on the school grounds.  The two fought with spear and sword, but their movements were superhuman.  Unbeknowst to Shirou, he was witnessing the beginning of the fifth Holy Grail War.  The two battling were Servants Lancer and Servant Archer, powerful heroes summoned by their magi Masters to battle each other.  The prize of this secret war was the legendary Holt Grail, which is said to grant the last surviving magi in the competition any wish he or she desired.

One of the Servants, Lancer, notices Shirou and goes after him because one of the sacred rules of the Grail War is that there cannot be any outside witnesses, not living ones at least.  Shirou is killed as his heart is pierced with a spear.  Archer's Master is actually a classmate of Shirou's, Rin Tohsaka.  And knowingly disobeying the rules of the War, Rin uses magic to revive Shirou, but leaves before Shirou regains consciousness.

Shirou stumbles home, still questioning whether the events that transpired that night were a dream or not.  But Lancer had been stalking him from school, and decides to finish the job in Shirou's own home.  Shirou tries to defend himself with his "tracing" power but is outmatched against the powerful Servant.  But as Lancer lunges to deal the killing blow, another Servant is suddenly summoned before Shirou.  She is the Servant Saber, said to be the strongest amongst all the Seven Servants.  Saber easily deflects Lancer's attacks, forcing him to retreat.

Saber asks Shirou whether he is her Master.  It seems Shirou unconsciously summoned Saber by channeling some hidden power in desperation.  Whether he likes it or not, Shirou is now Saber's Master and therefore must compete in the Holy Grail War.  It is a secret war with a dark and violent history.   And as Shirou soon discovers, the war of the magi may have a direct link to the fire which destroyed the city and his parents those many years ago.
