Darker than Black anime synopsis / summary:

A phenomenon known as Hell’s Gate appeared in Tokyo city, creating an impenetrable field around it that blocked out the sky. The appearance of the gate also granted certain people with supernatural abilities. To gain these powers the individual performs a contract, but in the process also loses the emotions which makes him human. Many use their powers to commit murder, and are thus feared by the public and are labeled as “Contractors.” But the truth behind the gate is hidden from the general public and all research is protected with great security.

Many countries are interested in Hell’s Gate and covertly hire Contractors to uncover its secrets. Hei (Black) is an elite Contractor sent to Tokyo disguised as a simple Chinese student studying abroad. He works with a four man team including: Yin (Silver), a blind girl with the ability to “see” using any body of water; Huang (Yellow), who handles surveillance and coordination; Mao (Cat), a black cat who is actually a Contractor who lost his original body. Hei’s job is to fight and kill enemy Contractors, and he is skillfully deadly at his job. It’s no surprise then that the Police Agency are very interested in catching Hei and his team. Although Contractors are usually devoid of emotions, Hei is strange in that he seems to show a genuine hatred towards all Contractors. Something happened in his past to make Hei choose the path of a Contractor and murderer; something dark and traumatic.
