    D.Gray Man Anime Synopsis

D.Gray Man is a Gothic themed Shonen manga with a wandering Exorcist named Allen Walker as the main character.  Although the work is fiction, it has themes tied to Christianity such as using the Vatican and Noah's Ark in the plot.  The series has comedic aspects but the overall feel is dark, to me it is reminiscent of Full Metal Alchemist.

The setting is of D.Gray-Man resembles 19th century Europe, the first story appears to be placed in London, England.  Allen Walker is part of an organization of Exorcists called the Black Order, which also employs scientists and administrators along with the Exorcists.  The Black Order has direct ties with the Vatican.  Its purpose is to defeat the Millennium Earl and his Akuma.

The Earl is an evil being bent on cleansing the world of mankind.  He uses creatures called Akuma to hunt and terrorize humans everywhere.  Akuma are actually a product of the grief and sorrow of people who lost their loved ones.  When their desire to bring their loved ones back is great enough, the Earl appears before them to grant them their wish.  But it is a false promise, the soul of the deceased is brought back but is trapped in a skeletal body only the Millennium Earl can control.  After the transfer is complete, he order the trapped soul to kill the person who made the wish and then mutates the soul into a monstrosity bent on killing humans.

The job of the Exorcists is to combat the Akuma and ultimately destroy the Earl.  The Exorcists are special people who possess the ability to use a substance called Innocence, a holy item created long ago to fight the Earl. Allen Walker, like all Exorcists, came into contact with Innocence before.  Upon bonding with the host, the Innocence transforms into a weapon that is resistant against Akuma attacks and is also the only thing that can damage and kill an Akuma.  For Allen, his Innocence has transformed his left arm into an anti-Akuma weapon.  Also, his left eye has the ability to see the trapped souls inside every Akuma.

In his quest to defeat the Millennium Earl, Allen is not alone.  There are other Exorcists out there, and sometimes they work together to take on tougher Akuma.  Once there were hundreds of Exorcists in the order, but many have been lost to the Earl's offenses.  Allen has a tough road ahead of him.  The Earl has gained much power over the last few years and his Akuma grow stronger with every person they murder.  Only the Black Order and its few remaining Exorcists stand in his way.
