Bokurano anime synopsis / summary:

During a school trip to the sea, a group of fifteen middle school children explore a cave by the beach.  Deep inside, they find a secret room filled with computer equipment and other electronics.  When the owner, a man who calls himself Kokopelli, returns, he tells the children that he is developing a game.  The premise is that the Earth is under attack from fifteen enemies, and the player must pilot a giant black robot to defend Earth.  Kokopelli wants the children to test his game and asks them to sign a contract by touching a metal device and then stating their name.  The children are curious and all but one of them signs the contract.  However, immediately afterwards, they all black out and end up back at the beach.  It is already night so they return back to their hostel, but one of the children spots a giant black shape standing in the sea.   It resembles the giant robot Kokopelli had described but how could it exist in real life?

The children are suddenly transported into the cockpit of the robot where they see Kokopelli piloting it.  Soon, a second robot materializes in front of them and Kokopelli tells everyone it is the enemy.  He defeats the enemy robot all the while giving a quick tutorial on the abilities of his robot to the children.  After the battle, Kokopelli tells the children that one of them will have to pilot next time, but he will not be able to help them anymore.  Before the children are returned back to the ground, one of them hears Kokopelli whisper “I’m sorry.”  Both robots vanish into thin air as quickly as they appeared, but the destruction to the landscape is still apparent.  This was not just a simple game and things will only become more sinister from there on.

*** This is not your traditional "children save the world with mecha" type of anime.  Bokurano deals with many dark themes and serious issues, and so may not be suitable for younger viewers.
